Netball is the largest participation sport in Australia with over 1.3 million participants and over 330,000 registered netballers. Played as a competitive sport in schools, socially, indoors and as a weekend activity, by both men and women alike, Netball is synonymous with fitness, activity and the sporting culture of Australia. As the governing body, Netball Australia continues to develop the game for players, coaches, umpires and administrators through a range of programmes.
As a component of the development of the game in Australia and a key to the marketing of the game, the Commonwealth Bank Trophy - an elite national league competition - was created in 1997 and continues to grow from strength to strength. The competition is played throughout the nation for 17 weeks, with 8 teams and over 120 players. The competition provides week in week out preparation for Australia's elite netballers, umpires and administrators.
Netball has grown enormously and, most recently, the level of media coverage has grown too, which can be attributed to the players, administrators and the support of the game at grass roots.
Australia were World Youth Champions 2005 and Commonwealth Games Gold Medallists from 2002.
