Apart from being a high profile sport in Fiji,Netball is the largest women's sport in the country with over 5000 participants including primary and secondary schools, district teams and age groups. Having qualified last year at the Norfolk Mini South Pacific Games, Fiji had the honour to represent the Oceania region at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, finishing 7th.
Following the World Netball Championship in 2003, Fiji is currently ranked 8th in the world and their goal is to move into bronze medal territory by 2007. This is not an impossible mission for Fiji since close neighbours are Australia and New Zealand and Fiji Netball Association has developed a strong working relationship with them in terms of athlete development and competition programmes.
Development programmes, in place for the next 3 years, will offer coaches, umpires and administrators their own individual areas of development, intended to strengthen Fiji's base to move forward.
By establishing Netball throughout the country, Fiji hope this positive move will promote Netball to gain more affiliates and sponsors.
